What is Gratitude?
Simply put, gratitude practice helps us to focus on what we do have, rather than what we don’t. Making this small change has been scientifically proven to create a huge impact on our overall mental health and life outcomes. Think of the “blue car” effect, you decide you may like to buy a blue car, and so you start to search for blue cars for sale. You discuss the blue cars with your friends and family and go to dealerships to try them out. Suddenly, you will notice that you begin to see blue cars everywhere, without even trying! This is because your brain has rewired itself to pick them out in your environment. Similarly, by using gratitude practice to consciously refocus on the positive aspects of your life, you will find that your brain begins to see these first over the negatives.
No matter what you have going on in your life, there are always things to be grateful for. These moments are so often missed in the busyness of our daily lives. Try moving your focus in these moments. That beautiful sunny day, a warm mug of tea, laughter from your children or a cuddle from your favourite pet. As a result, your mental health will improve by avoiding negative thought spirals and unnecessary worrying. You also pause and savour these small memories and moments to keep forever. The benefits are endless, what have you got to lose?
How to incorporate gratitude into daily life?
Here are some ways to begin incorporating gratitude practices into your life:
Keep a gratitude journal and add to it every morning.
Avoid negative social media content or news by switching off or blocking and muting accounts that leave you feeling depleted.
Message someone and let them know how much you appreciate them. Or give a thank you card or some flowers to make them feel extra special.
Get into nature and focus on noticing the beauty around you. Admire the trees, flowers, birds and wildlife.
Smile more often, find things that make you laugh. Laughter is the best medicine!
Participate in random acts of kindness, help an elderly person, give money to a homeless person or donate to a charity.
Watch inspiring videos that remind you that there is good in the world.
Include an act of kindness in your life each day.
Call a family member you haven’t spoken to in a while and let them know you're thinking of them.
Cook your favourite meal, and switch off from distractions to allow you to enjoy the flavours.
You won't be able to do all of these every day. However, they give some idea of the small things you can do that really do make a big difference.
